The role of education changes with every era, based on the needs of the society.
Now, in the middle of the 21st century, an era of digitisation and continuous technological advancements, with connectivity and interdependence is leading to a world that is truly one. The need of the hour would be to adapt, be dynamic, evolve and have the ability to learn, unlearn and relearn continuously.
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” – Alvin Toffler.
Hence, the role of education now is not just about acquiring information and knowledge. It has to ensure outward growth with an inward journey, with a focus on stability and sensitivity so that children can adapt to continuous changes and learn to learn. This comes by connecting to one’s self, his/her roots and the immediate environment.
At this juncture, it is important that education is concerned with the totality of life, focusing on sustainability to protect the earth. Children need to understand the interdependence and interconnectedness of the entire ecosystem, leading to internalization of global issues like climate change, food availability, biodiversity and more.
This holistic approach to education empowers and enables children to be compassionate contributors, understanding global issues and contributing towards a peaceful, nature friendly and sustainable future, truly ready for the 21st century. This is not only just the vision of the school but is also the requirement of the world today.
